Samsung loses legal bid to ban iPhone 4S in Italy
Samsung Electronics Co. 005930.SE has lost a legal bid to have sales of Apple Inc.'s AAPL latest iPhone halted in Italy. It had alleged the U.S. company violated some of its wireless-communications patents.
Samsung said in a statement Friday that it is "disappointed" with the decision of the Milan court. The court rejected Samsung's petition for an injunction banning iPhone 4S sales in Italy.
Samsung said in October last year that it would seek to stop iPhone 4S sales in France and Italy as part of its broader fight with Apple over the design and technology of smartphones and tablet computers.
Samsung, which overtook Apple in the third quarter of last year as the world's largest seller of smartphones, is seeking sales injunctions on Apple smartphones and tablets in several countries, including the U.S. and Japan and in Europe. It main dispute is that its wireless-communications technology has been copied.
The legal battle between the two erupted in April when Apple accused the Korean electronics giant of copying key design elements in smartphones and tablets.
In December, a French court turned down Samsung's bid to stop iPhone 4S sales in France saying an injunction was a "disproportionate" measure.
Apple was not immediately available for comment on the Italian court's decision.
